Designated WMDO-001 by the Wexler Team, this Washington Quarter variety represents a fundamentally different category from a standard doubled die — it is a master die doubling obverse, meaning the doubling originated on the master die rather than on an individual working die. Because all working dies for 1982 derived from this master die, every 1982-P, 1982-D, and 1982-S quarter carries this doubling regardless of mint facility. The doubling manifests as spread toward center with significant extra thickness on IN GOD WE TRUST, and slightly on the date. Since the master die is the parent from which all working dies descend, die markers vary specimen to specimen depending on which working die struck the coin, but the underlying doubling remains constant.
