Description

Unlike a standard doubled die from a single working die, the 1925-D Buffalo nickel WMDO-001 traces its doubling to the master die itself. Cataloged as 1925-P,D,S 5¢ WMDO-001 by the Wexler Team and cross-referenced as CONECA MD-1-O-IV, this is a Class IV Master Die Doubling Obverse variety. Because the doubling was impressed into the master die — from which all working hubs and subsequently all working dies were produced — every 1925 Buffalo nickel from Philadelphia, Denver, and San Francisco should show the same doubling. Apparent differences in strength from coin to coin are attributable to hub wear, die wear, and coin wear rather than die-specific anomalies. Master die doubling occupies a unique position in error collecting: simultaneously ubiquitous across the entire mintage yet underappreciated, since many assume doubling must come from a single die to matter. The Denver example here represents one of three facilities producing coins from this master die.
