1982 Atypical Die Clash ADC-25C-1982-01
Error
Description
Listed by MadDieClashes as ADC-25c-1982-01, this atypical die clash occurs on a 1982-P Washington quarter in a very late die state condition. Despite the advanced die wear, the clash impression itself is remarkably strong on both the obverse and reverse dies. An atypical die clash differs from a standard die clash in that the clash occurs at an angle or orientation different from normal die alignment, producing transferred design elements in unexpected positions. On the obverse, parts of the eagle's wings are clashed into the field in front of and behind Washington's head, creating ghostly outlines of the heraldic eagle's wing feathers superimposed over the portrait area. The reverse displays the outline of Washington's head in the field to the left of the eagle's head and within the eagle's left wing, a dramatic transference of the obverse design elements. The 1982-P quarter is a copper-nickel clad coin weighing 5.67 grams with a 24.3 mm diameter, part of the Washington Clad and Silver Proof Quarters 1965-1998 series. John Flanagan's portrait of George Washington on the obverse, adapted from a bust by Jean-Antoine Houdon, paired with the heraldic eagle reverse, provides distinctive design elements whose clash impressions are readily identifiable. Atypical die clashes are prized by collectors for their dramatic visual appearance and the insight they provide into mint production anomalies.
