1982-D Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-002

Description

Displaying strong extra thickness on the letters of LIBERTY and IN GOD WE TRUST with light extra thickness on the date — especially the lower 9 — the 1982-D WDDO-002 is the second Wexler-cataloged doubled die obverse for the Denver Mint's zinc Large Date cent of 1982. This variety appears on the Large Date zinc planchets, distinguishing it from the Small Date variety that carries WDDO-001. The reverse die markers for WDDO-002 are exceptionally numerous and detailed: two short die scratches extend north-northeast from the upper right of the second Memorial column, a die gouge appears at the rim left of the D in UNITED, a die scratch runs from the center left of the C of CENT southwest to the bottom of the E in ONE, a short vertical die gouge sits between the N and E of ONE, small die gouges appear inside the upper O of ONE, numerous circular die scratches cover the statue area in the sixth Memorial bay, and a die crack extends from the right tip of the Memorial base to the rim. On the obverse, a short die scratch runs parallel to the base of the bust below the designer's initials. This wealth of die markers makes WDDO-002 one of the most thoroughly documented doubled dies in the 1982-D census. The coin was struck during the historic mid-1982 composition transition from copper to copper-plated zinc. No additional cross-references are known. Attribution by Wexler Team.
