Opening the Cuds on Coins census for the 1982 Denver Mint Lincoln Memorial cent with the Zinc Large Date designation, CU-1C-1982D-01 documents the first confirmed cud variety for this historically significant date and mint combination. The 1982-D cent occupies a unique position in numismatic history: it was produced during the mid-year transition from the traditional 95% copper, 5% zinc alloy (3.1 grams) to the new copper-plated zinc composition (2.5 grams), and both Large Date and Small Date punch styles were employed, creating multiple distinct subtypes from a single year and mint. As the inaugural census entry, CU-1C-1982D-01 established the reference point against which all subsequent 1982-D cud discoveries would be measured. The cud itself — a raised, featureless mass where a die rim segment fractured and separated — is characteristic of terminal die failure and requires no magnification to identify.
