1977-S Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-008

Description

The 1977-S Proof Eisenhower Dollar WDDO-008, attributed by the Wexler team under Variety ID 1977-S $1 Pr WDDO-008, shows Class II doubling on the obverse. The spread is visible on IN GOD WE TRUST, the serif of the 1 in the date, the loop of the 9, and the horizontal bars of the 77. The S mintmark exhibits a closed loop with a clockwise tilt. On the reverse, the die shows machine doubling (MDDR) rather than hub doubling — a mechanical, shelf-like displacement distinct from the true hub doubling present on the obverse. Machine doubling produces a flat, shelf-like secondary image rather than the rounded, displaced impression of hub doubling, and its presence on the reverse does not elevate the variety's classification. The 1977-S Proof Eisenhower Dollar was struck at the San Francisco Mint for inclusion in that year's proof and silver proof sets. Wexler Variety ID: 1977-S $1 Pr WDDO-008.
