Description

Attributed by the Wexler Team as 1977-S $1 Proof WDDO-002, this Eisenhower dollar proof variety exhibits strong Class I rotated hub doubling on IN GOD WE TRUST, LIBERTY, and the date, with the doubling stronger on IGWT than on ERTY of LIBERTY. Class I rotation produces a consistent angular displacement where all design elements rotate around a common center point, with the rotation point for this variety located between center and K3 at the rim. Doubling is also visible on the upper portions of Dwight Eisenhower's hair in Frank Gasparro's portrait. Submitted by Dale Ericson with photographs by Billy G. Crawford, this variety carries a CONECA cross-reference of 2-O-I. Obverse die markers include a die scratch under the jaw on the neck running nearly parallel to the jaw, while no reverse markers have been noted. The 1977-S Eisenhower dollar proof was struck at the San Francisco Mint in copper-nickel clad composition, weighing 22.68 grams with a diameter of 38.1 mm — the same diameter as the Morgan and Peace dollars it succeeded as the large-format U.S. dollar coin. As a proof issue, this coin was struck on polished planchets with mirror-like fields that enhance the visibility of the rotated hub doubling, particularly on the high-relief IGWT motto where the strongest doubling appears. The Eisenhower dollar series (1971-1978) was the last large-format circulating dollar before the transition to the smaller Susan B. Anthony dollar in 1979, and proof versions struck at San Francisco remain popular with variety collectors.
