1977-S Doubled Die Obverse DDO-002
Error
Description
On the second cataloged doubled die obverse for the 1977-S Proof Eisenhower Dollar, medium spread from equal pressure hubbings is visible on IN GOD WE TRUST, LIBERTY, and the date. Equal pressure hubbings indicate that the primary and secondary hub impressions were applied with consistent force, producing doubling where the secondary image sits alongside the primary at uniform depth rather than appearing as a shallow ghost. The Eisenhower Dollar, produced from 1971 to 1978 as the last large-format U.S. dollar coin, featured Frank Gasparro's portrait of President Dwight D. Eisenhower paired with an adaptation of the Apollo 11 mission insignia on the reverse. Die markers UVC-104 and DMR-003 provide the attribution references within the VarietyVista system. Three die stages are documented: Stage A in Early Die State captures the doubling before significant wear, while Stages B and C at Mid and Late Die State remain unconfirmed. The 1977-S proof was struck in copper-nickel clad composition at the San Francisco Mint exclusively for proof sets sold to collectors, ensuring that surviving examples typically exhibit well-preserved surfaces where the medium spread remains clearly visible.
