Description

As the primary doubled die obverse for the 1977-S Proof Eisenhower Dollar, DDO-001 holds the benchmark designation for this large-format proof issue — the Ike Dollar's generous 38.1mm diameter renders die varieties at a scale that amplifies visibility well beyond smaller denominations. Cataloged by VarietyVista as UVC-083 (DMR-002), this variety displays a light spread on IN GOD WE TRUST and the numeral 1 of the date, concentrating doubling in the upper left quadrant of Frank Gasparro's obverse design. The Eisenhower Dollar series (1971-1978) represented the last large-format circulating dollar before the smaller Susan B. Anthony dollar in 1979, and the 1977-S proof was struck in copper-nickel clad — silver-clad proof Ikes had ended after 1976. The light spread on IGWT benefits from oversized lettering, where even modest displacement produces a perceptible secondary image. As DDO-001, this variety serves as the starting point for collectors surveying doubled die obverses on proof Ikes, and the large coin surface provides ample real estate for examining light spread that would be challenging to detect on smaller denominations.
