1976-S Doubled Die Obverse DDO-002
Error
Description
This second catalog instance of the 1976-S Bicentennial quarter DDO-002 represents the same die variety documented through a separate legacy import path, preserving attribution data from the VarietyVista source alongside the Wexler documentation. Light spread appears on the dual "1776-1976" date and the LIB portion of LIBERTY on this CN clad proof quarter, maintaining consistency with the companion record. The Bicentennial quarter program saw San Francisco produce both copper-nickel clad and 40% silver proof versions, with the CN clad proofs included in standard proof sets while the silver proofs appeared in special three-piece Bicentennial sets. VarietyVista's die stage documentation tracks this variety from UVC-230 / DMR-005 through Early Die State (Stage A confirmed on both obverse and reverse), Mid Die State (Stage B, unconfirmed), and Late Die State (Stage C, unconfirmed). The presence of duplicate catalog entries for the same physical die variety reflects the comprehensive nature of modern die variety documentation, where multiple attribution services independently catalog varieties and cross-referencing remains an ongoing project. Jack Ahr's Colonial Drummer boy reverse design was selected from over 800 submissions in the Treasury's national design competition, and the Bicentennial quarter became one of the most widely saved coins of the era. The light-class doubling on this proof issue requires careful examination under magnification, with the LIB letters serving as the primary diagnostic focal point.
