1976 Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-002

Description

Identified by the Wexler Team as 1976 1¢ WDDO-002 and cross-referenced as CONECA 1-O-VI and Coppercoins 1976P-1DO-001, this doubled die obverse is another Class VI (distended hub doubling) variety for the 1976 Philadelphia Lincoln Memorial cent. Submitted by John A. Wexler himself — one of the foremost authorities on U.S. coin die varieties — this variety displays extra thickness on IN GOD WE TRUST and slightly on LIBERTY. The Class VI designation indicates that the hub expanded slightly during the die-making impression, producing extra thickness without the directional spread seen in Class I through Class V doubling. Both WDDO-001 and WDDO-002 share the same CONECA classification (1-O-VI), reflecting their common Class VI mechanism, but they originate from different dies with distinct marker profiles. For WDDO-002, the obverse die markers include a die gouge (dot) on the lower front of the vest, a die gouge running north-northeast from the I of IN, and a die gouge (dot) to the right of the lower G in GOD. On the reverse, die scratches running south-southwest to north-northeast appear at the bottom of the third Memorial bay, and additional die scratches running southwest to northeast can be found in the upper first two Memorial bays. Notably, several of these die markers overlap with those described for WDDO-001, suggesting that these two dies may share certain production characteristics while remaining distinct varieties.
