Description

Bearing the Cuds on Coins designation CU-1C-1976-04, this rim cud is the fourth documented rim break on 1976 Philadelphia Mint Lincoln Memorial cents. A cud forms when a wedge-shaped section of die steel fractures away from the die's periphery, creating a cavity that fills with planchet metal during the striking process and produces a raised, textureless mass along the coin's rim. The error type is among the most visually dramatic in all of numismatics — even relatively small breaks create an obviously abnormal feature that catches the eye of experienced error collectors immediately. The Philadelphia Mint continued its standard Lincoln cent production throughout 1976 without any design modifications for the Bicentennial, striking coins without a mint mark from the 95% copper alloy composition. The high production volumes at Philadelphia consumed an enormous number of die pairs, and four documented cuds for the 1976 date reflects the normal rate of terminal die failure that accompanied such large-scale production.
