1976-D Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-001

Description

Cataloged by the Wexler Team as 1976-D 25¢ WDDO-001 and cross-referenced as CONECA 1-O-V, Cherrypickers FS-25-1976D-101 (028), and Breen #4452, this Denver Mint Bicentennial Washington Quarter displays a strong clockwise spread from a pivot at approximately 6:00, most visible on LIBERTY. A lesser spread shows on IGWT and the upper queue. On the obverse, a north-south die scratch appears northeast of the mint mark, a die scratch runs SW from the upper left B of LIBERTY, and another runs north from the lower right R of LIBERTY. No significant reverse die markers have been noted. The Breen #4452 cross-reference places this variety in Walter Breen's comprehensive encyclopedia, confirming its longstanding recognition. Dual-dated 1776-1976 as part of the Bicentennial celebration, this quarter features Jack L. Ahr's Colonial Drummer reverse design instead of the standard heraldic eagle. Struck in copper-nickel clad composition, the Bicentennial quarter was produced in large quantities at all three operating mints. The strong clockwise spread on LIBERTY makes WDDO-001 one of the most recognized Bicentennial quarter varieties.
