In 1976, coins were struck at the Philadelphia, Denver, and San Francisco Mints with a combined mintage of 1.7 billion. This represents the highest annual mintage in the entire series, above the series median of 543.9 million. The obverse features the standard obverse for each denomination with dual dates 1776-1976 and the reverse displays special reverse designs: Colonial drummer boy (quarter), Independence Hall (half dollar), Liberty Bell and Moon (dollar). Struck after the transition from silver to clad coinage, as the Mint adapted to modern production methods and record-breaking mintages. 24.3 mm in diameter, with a reeded edge.
