About This Coin
The 1976 Eisenhower Dollar (Bicentennial) is a United States cent from the Bicentennial Coins 1976 series — the only year of issue. In 1976, coins were struck at the San Francisco, Denver, and Philadelphia Mints with a combined mintage of 242.6 million. This represents the lowest annual mintage in the entire series, below the series median of 543.9 million. The obverse features Dwight D. Eisenhower facing left and the reverse displays an eagle landing on the moon with an olive branch in its talons, commemorating the Apollo 11 lunar landing. Dual-dated 1776-1976 with a special Liberty Bell superimposed on the Moon reverse. Two varieties exist: Type I (bold sans-serif lettering) and Type II (thinner serif lettering). No coins bear a 1975 date. 38.5 mm in diameter, with a reeded edge. Collectors have cataloged 17 known die varieties for this date across 5 categories, including atypical die clash, doubled die obverse, doubled die reverse and 2 other types. Across its variants, estimated values range from $1 to $45 depending on mint mark, grade, and strike type. A notable auction result reached $41K in PR66 grade at Bowers & Merena. Designed by Frank Gasparro/Michael Collins & James Cooper.
