1976-D Doubled Die Obverse DDO-001

Description

Light spread on the dual date "1776-1976" defines this Bicentennial Washington Quarter DDO-001 from the Denver Mint, pairing John Flanagan's George Washington obverse with Jack Ahr's colonial drummer boy reverse. Three die stages document the working die's progression: Stage A with obverse and reverse in early die state, Stage B tentatively in mid-die state (unconfirmed), and Stage C tentatively in late die state (unconfirmed). Die markers UVC-224 and DMR-002 identify the specific working die. The Bicentennial reverse depicts a colonial drummer boy with a victory torch encircled by thirteen stars. This regular strike can be found in official Mint Sets from the Bicentennial production period, struck in copper-nickel clad composition. Note that this variety shares a title and UVC/DMR codes with the 1976-D Kennedy Half Dollar DDO-001, but they are entirely different coins — this is the quarter denomination with Washington's portrait and the colonial drummer reverse, not the half dollar with JFK and Independence Hall.
