Description

First Wexler-cataloged doubled die obverse for the 1974-S Proof Eisenhower Dollar in standard clad composition, WDDO-001 exhibits close Class II doubling towards the center on LIBERTY. Class II hub doubling occurs when the working hub deforms slightly between impressions during die sinking, producing a spread that varies in direction across design elements rather than maintaining uniform displacement. The centripetal spread on LIBERTY is the primary diagnostic. Frank Gasparro designed the Eisenhower Dollar (1971-1978), with a left-facing portrait of President Eisenhower on the obverse and an eagle landing on the Moon commemorating Apollo 11 on the reverse. This specimen is from the standard clad proof — the copper-nickel clad composition used for regular proof sets, distinct from the 40% silver proof version also produced at San Francisco. Struck at 38.1mm on polished clad planchets, the proof's mirror fields enhance the visibility of the Class II spread.
