1972-S Repunched Mintmark RPM-002

Description

Displaying an S/S East displacement, this second documented repunched mintmark on the 1972-S Proof Roosevelt Dime preserves evidence of the mintmark punch being applied twice with the initial impression offset to the east of the final position. Cataloged as UVC-571 and DMR-005, three die stages are recorded: Stage A with obverse and reverse in early die state, Stage B in mid die state (unconfirmed), and Stage C in late die state (unconfirmed). Where RPM-001 for this date shows northward displacement, RPM-002 shifts eastward — confirming that multiple 1972-S Proof dime dies received imprecise mintmark placement, each with its own unique directional offset. Proof coins struck at the San Francisco Mint from 1968 onward used individually hand-punched mintmarks just as business strike dies did, so each working die could potentially carry a distinct mintmark position.
