1972-S Repunched Mintmark RPM-001

Description

The first cataloged repunched mintmark for the 1972-S Proof Roosevelt Dime, this variety exhibits an S/S North — the S mintmark was initially punched into the die and then re-entered slightly to the north, creating visible remnants of the first impression below the final position. Cataloged as UVC-570 and DMR-004, three die stages have been documented: Stage A with both obverse and reverse in early die state, Stage B in mid die state (unconfirmed), and Stage C in late die state (unconfirmed). Because Proof dies were hand-punched with the same mintmark tools used for business strikes, positional variations were just as possible on Proof coinage — and arguably more collectible, since the mirror fields of a Proof strike can make the repunching easier to detect under magnification. Struck in clad composition at the San Francisco Mint as a Proof-only issue, the 1972-S Roosevelt Dime carries John R. Sinnock's enduring design.
