Error
Description
An S/S North repunched mintmark on this 1971-S proof Washington Quarter was documented by VarietyVista with die markers UVC-1858 / DMR-013. Stage A at EDS reveals strong die scratches on the rim above LIBER of LIBERTY, with the reverse at EDS. Stage B at MDS (unconfirmed); Stage C at LDS (unconfirmed). The die scratches above LIBERTY at EDS indicate they were introduced during die preparation or handling before production, making them permanent identification markers visible on all specimens regardless of die state. John Flanagan designed the Washington Quarter. Struck as a proof at the San Francisco Mint in copper-nickel clad, weighing 5.67 grams with a 24.26 mm diameter. The northward S displacement indicates the initial mintmark was placed slightly too low, with the corrective second punch positioning the final S higher.
