1971-S Repunched Mintmark RPM-003

Description

Cataloged by VarietyVista as RPM-003 (UVC-1224, DMR-005), this 1971-S Proof Washington quarter displays an S/S Southeast repunching in which the secondary S is shifted toward the southeast of the primary mint mark. Three die stages are documented. Stage A is provisionally early die state, unconfirmed. Stage B is provisionally mid-die state, unconfirmed. Stage C is provisionally late die state, unconfirmed. The 1971-S Proof quarter was struck at San Francisco for annual Proof sets and not released to circulation. Among the 1971-S Proof RPM varieties, directional repunchings — where the secondary S shifts in a cardinal or intercardinal direction — are separated from tilted varieties.
