Description

Submitted by John A. Wexler, this proof Washington Quarter WDDR-001 shows a close spread towards the center on QUARTER DOLLAR, AMERICA, and the branches. The center-directed spread across both the denomination and the heraldic elements of the reverse creates a broad diagnostic pattern. Two die states have been documented. The first state shows multiple die gouges around LIB in LIBERTY, a die gouge northeast of the mintmark S, die gouges right of WE on the obverse, a die gouge at the bottom tip of the eagle's right wing, and a die gouge between the E in EPU and the wing on the reverse. The second state shows no significant markers on either side. Collectors should look for the obverse LIBERTY gouges as the quickest initial sorting criterion, then confirm the reverse doubling on QUARTER DOLLAR and the branches to complete the attribution of this proof variety.
