Description

Light spread across UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, ONE DOLLAR, and E PLURIBUS UNUM distinguishes this 1971 Denver Mint Eisenhower Dollar doubled die reverse — the primary DDR for the date, cataloged by VarietyVista. The die stage documentation is exceptionally thorough: four stages are tracked under two different die pairings. UVC-132 / DMR-010 covers Stages A through C, progressing from Early Die State through Mid Die State to Late Die State with both reverse and obverse. A second pairing under UVC-122 / DMR-007 covers Stage D, where the reverse is in Late Die State but paired with a changed obverse die also in LDS — indicating the Mint replaced the original obverse die while continuing to use the doubled reverse die. The reverse design variant is identified as RDV-006.5, and the obverse is separately listed as DDO-001, making this yet another "combo" variety with doubled die effects on both sides. The 1971-D Eisenhower Dollar was the first regular-issue dollar coin struck since the Peace Dollar in 1935, and Frank Gasparro designed both the obverse portrait of President Eisenhower and the reverse depicting the Apollo 11 mission insignia — an eagle landing on the Moon with Earth in the background. Denver produced approximately 68.59 million business-strike Eisenhower Dollars in 1971 on the copper-nickel clad composition, and DDR-001 represents the most significant doubled die reverse for this inaugural date.
