1970-S Doubled Die Obverse DDO-004

Description

Struck as a proof at the San Francisco Mint during the first year that proof dimes were produced exclusively in the copper-nickel clad composition, this 1970-S Roosevelt Dime DDO-004 shows light spread on the date, designer's initials, and WE TRUST. The transition from silver to clad proof production in 1968 (with no proofs struck from 1965 through 1967) makes the 1970-S a relatively early entry in the clad proof era. Cataloged by VarietyVista with pending codes UVC-??? and DMR-0?? that have not yet received final assignment, three die stages are documented: Stage A in early die state with light die scratches on the bust and the reverse also in EDS, Stage B in mid-die state (unconfirmed), and Stage C reaching late die state (unconfirmed). The pending catalog codes indicate this variety was documented before receiving full integration into the VarietyVista numbering sequence — a status that sometimes reflects ongoing research or verification. The designer's initials (JS for John R. Sinnock) sit near the truncation of Roosevelt's bust, and their small size means even light doubling there can be challenging to detect without magnification of at least 5x.
