1970-S Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-027
Error
Description
The Proof Large Date companion to WDDO-027, this entry carries the same Cherry Pickers' Guide designation FS-01-1970S-105 (030.6) and documents the very strong clockwise spread that earned this variety its place in the guide. The Large Date Proof 1970-S cent features the characteristically tall 7 in the date, and on this doubled die, the strong clockwise hub displacement interacts with that tall 7 to produce particularly visible doubling on the date numerals — the greater vertical extent of the Large Date digits provides more surface area for the rotational spread to manifest. Cross-referenced as CONECA 13-O-I and Coppercoins 1970S-1DO-015P, this variety is documented across multiple attribution services. Proof coins receive special handling throughout the minting process — polished planchets, carefully prepared dies, multiple strikes at higher pressure — resulting in sharper detail and mirror-like fields that make doubled die evidence especially crisp and well-defined compared to business strike examples. The very strong spread noted for this variety means the doubling should be visible under standard 5x to 10x magnification on Proof specimens with intact surfaces. No specific die markers beyond the doubling have been documented, indicating a clean die surface where the hub doubling dominates the attribution criteria. The Large Date Proof 1970-S cent was produced in greater numbers than the Small Date Proof, making this the more accessible of the two FS-01-1970S-105 entries for collectors, though both carry the Cherry Pickers' Guide premium associated with listed varieties.
