1970-S Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-006
Error
Description
Listed under the Proof Large Date parent, the 1970-S WDDO-006 presents the same Class I counterclockwise spread doubled die obverse documented in its Small Date counterpart but classified within the ODV-025 Large Date logotype framework. The counterclockwise rotational direction of the spread distinguishes this variety from the majority of 1970-S doubled dies, which exhibit clockwise rotation, and the CCW designation should be the first attribution checkpoint for collectors examining potential specimens. Die gouges at three specific locations serve as definitive identification markers: above the T in TRUST at the rim, below Lincoln's bust, and to the left of the shoulder. These three-point die markers form a reliable attribution triangle — if all three gouges are present in their documented positions, the die identity is confirmed regardless of how clearly the counterclockwise doubling presents on any individual specimen. Crawford CDDO-010 provides the cross-reference to Crawford's independent attribution system. The Proof Large Date classification means this variety was struck on San Francisco proof presses from a die carrying the ODV-025 hub's larger, more widely spaced date digits. On proof surfaces, the counterclockwise spread interacts with the cameo contrast between frosted devices and mirrored fields, and collectors should examine the leftward-shifted edges of letters in LIBERTY and IN GOD WE TRUST where the CCW rotation deposits its most visible extra metal.
