1970 Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-015
Error
Description
Exhibiting doubling above the 7 in the date, WDDO-015 on the 1970 Lincoln Memorial cent is accompanied by highly distinctive die markers: numerous vertical die scratches run through the 19 on the obverse, while several die scratches mark the reverse surface. The vertical scratches through 19 are especially diagnostic — their orientation perpendicular to the date baseline and their intersection with both digits create a pattern immediately recognizable under magnification, making WDDO-015 one of the more rapidly identifiable DDO varieties for this date. Cross-referenced as CONECA 7-O-V, this variety carries a Class V pivoted hub doubling designation. The vertical scratches were likely introduced during die polishing, where abrasive materials moved vertically across the date area. For collectors, these scratches serve dual purposes: rapid variety identification and die state assessment, since progressive wear may alter their appearance over the die's production life.
