1970-D Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-005
ErrorDescription
Documented by the Wexler Team as 1970-D 25c WDDR-005, this Denver Mint Washington Quarter exhibits a relatively uncommon reverse hub marriage — a Type F over Type G reverse, designated WMHR-001 over WMHR-002. This master hub reverse transition means the die received impressions from two different master hub generations during its manufacture, producing design differences that go beyond simple positional doubling. Moderate spread directed toward the center shows on QUARTER DOLLAR, the olive and oak branches flanking the heraldic eagle, and more subtly on UNITED and AMERICA in the upper legend. The centripetal spread direction — toward the coin's center rather than outward — distinguishes this from more common rim-directed Class II events. Obverse die markers include two die gouges positioned to the left of the top of the R in LIBERTY and a small die gouge above the D mintmark, while the reverse carries die gouges to the right of the last A in AMERICA and to the right of the E in AMERICA. The 1970-D quarter was struck during the clad era in copper-nickel composition (8.33% nickel bonded to a pure copper core), with Denver producing a substantial mintage that year. No known cross-references exist beyond the Wexler designation. The Type F/Type G hub marriage adds a dimensional layer of collector interest beyond the positional doubling itself, as the two master hub reverses carry subtly different design characteristics in the eagle, lettering proportions, and branch details that compound with the moderate spread to create a variety with both hub doubling and design transition diagnostics.
