1969-S Repunched Mintmark RPM-004

Description

Identified by VarietyVista as UVC-1170 and DMR-005, RPM-004 on the 1969-S Lincoln Memorial cent presents an unusual die-state asymmetry: when first documented (Stage A), the obverse is Early Die State while the reverse already shows Mid Die State wear, suggesting this reverse die had previously been paired with a different obverse before being rematched. Such die-marriage switches were routine at U.S. Mint facilities where obverse and reverse dies were maintained as separate inventories and paired based on availability rather than matching service histories. Stage B introduces numerous die scratches across the obverse, advancing it to Early-Mid Die State, while the reverse develops numerous fine die scratches running north-south and remains at Mid Die State. A tentative Stage C at Late Die State has been reported but remains unconfirmed. The north-south orientation of the reverse scratches is noteworthy — it differs from the southeast orientation seen on RPM-003, indicating a different maintenance technique or mechanical contact source. Hand-punched S mint marks from the 1969 San Francisco Mint vary in position because each working die received its own individually applied punch, and RPM-004's repunch reflects a misalignment significant enough to leave residual traces visible under low-power magnification. Collectors will find the mismatched die-state starting condition a useful teaching example for understanding how die marriages were managed during production.
