Three confirmed cuds from a single date and mint — with additional varieties cataloged at higher numbers — indicate that die breakage was a recurring occurrence despite the quality expectations associated with the San Francisco facility. The explanation lies partly in production volume: while San Francisco struck fewer cents than Philadelphia or Denver, its dies still endured hundreds of thousands of impressions each, and the cumulative fatigue from repeated high-pressure strikes (typically 30-40 tons of force per impression on a cent die) inevitably finds weak points in the die steel's microstructure.
