When multiple DDR varieties for a single date-mint combination affect the same inscriptions at the same intensity, the die markers become the sole reliable means of attribution — each UVC number represents a distinct physical working die that received its own independent hub impression error. The sequential relationship between DDR-005 (UVC-1363) and other 1969-S varieties allows collectors to systematically work through the catalog by correlating observed die characteristics against the documented marker references. Struck at the San Francisco Mint in standard copper-nickel composition (75% copper, 25% nickel), the 1969-S nickel was a business strike produced for general circulation. San Francisco's dual role during this era — producing both proof coins for collector sets and business strikes for commerce — generated separate die pools, and DDR-005 originates from the business strike production.
