1969-S Doubled Die Reverse DDR-002
Error
Description
Building upon the first-year post-hiatus San Francisco production, DDR-002 on the 1969-S Jefferson Nickel presents light spread on UNITED STATES OF AMERICA with progressive left-to-right intensification — the Class V pivoted hub doubling pattern. Die markers UVC-1360 and DMR-013 confirm this working die. The 1969-S was produced at the San Francisco Mint during the second year after mintmarks returned to circulating coinage following the 1965-1967 removal, and the S mintmark appears in the standard position to the right of Monticello on Felix Schlag's reverse. DDR-002's catalog position behind DDR-001 indicates it was either the second variety documented or considered second in significance for the date-mint, and its light spread classification suggests subtler doubling than the primary DDR-001. The progressive left-to-right gradient across UNITED STATES OF AMERICA follows the same general pattern as several other Jefferson Nickel DDR varieties from adjacent dates, but each originates from a unique working die with its own UVC and DMR identifiers — UVC-1360 and DMR-013 are exclusive to this specific die and distinguish DDR-002 from all other 1969-S reverse varieties. Struck in standard copper-nickel composition (75% copper, 25% nickel), this coin's light progressive spread is best confirmed by examining the rightward letters of AMERICA under at least 5x magnification, where the displacement reaches its maximum before tracing the gradient leftward.
