1969-D Repunched Mintmark WRPM-002
Error
Description
Struck on the copper-nickel clad planchets introduced after the 1965 composition change, this 1969-D Roosevelt Dime exhibits a repunched mintmark cataloged as WRPM-002 by John A. Wexler. Repunched mintmarks on Roosevelt Dimes from the late 1960s reflect the continuation of the hand-punching process, where each working die received its mintmark individually from a small steel letter punch. Any misalignment between multiple impressions of the punch left traces of earlier placements visible alongside the final position. The 1969-D issue was produced at the Denver Mint during a period when clad coinage production was still being refined following the transition from silver, and die variety specialists have documented multiple RPM varieties across Roosevelt Dime dates of this era. The clad composition, consisting of a copper core bonded between outer layers of copper-nickel alloy, replaced the 90% silver standard that had defined American dimes since 1837. While the composition change dramatically altered the metallurgical character of the dime, the hand-punched mintmark process remained unchanged, preserving the conditions that generate repunched mintmark varieties through at least the early 1980s when the Mint transitioned to hubbed mintmarks.
