Description

Completing the trio of cataloged doubled die obverses for the 1969-D Kennedy Half Dollar, WDDO-003 is the third distinct working die with hub doubling for this Denver Mint issue. Three separate doubled die obverses for a single date and mint reflects the volume of working dies required and the challenges of the multi-impression hubbing process. The 1969-D was struck in 40% silver clad, the penultimate year of this composition before silver was eliminated from circulating half dollars in 1971. Gilroy Roberts's obverse portrait and Frank Gasparro's heraldic eagle reverse both feature intricate elements where hub misalignment can produce visible doubling under magnification. Kennedy Half Dollars from 1965 through 1970 occupy a unique niche as the last circulating coins to contain silver.
