1969-D Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-002
Error
Description
Second in the trio of cataloged doubled die obverses for the 1969-D Kennedy Half Dollar, WDDO-002 is a distinct working die with its own unique doubling signature and die markers. Struck at Denver in 40% silver clad, the 1969-D was among the last half dollars to contain silver, as the following year would be the final for this format before full copper-nickel clad production began in 1971. Each doubled die variety results from a specific working die that received misaligned hub impressions, and the differences between WDDO-001, WDDO-002, and WDDO-003 lie in the direction, class, and extent of doubling plus die-specific markers such as scratches, gouges, and cracks. Frank Gasparro's heraldic eagle reverse bears his GF initials at the base of the eagle's tail feathers. The Kennedy Half Dollar debuted in 1964 as a memorial to President John F. Kennedy and rapidly became one of the most popular American series. Cross-referenced as Wexler Variety ID: 1969-D 50c WDDO-002. Attribution requires careful comparison of doubling characteristics against published references.
