1968-S Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-024

Description

Attributed by Tony Russo and designated one of the "Best Of" Nickel Doubled Die Varieties — among the finest examples of Jefferson Nickel hub doubling events in the Wexler catalog — the 1968-S Proof Jefferson Nickel WDDO-024 exhibits Class I, Rotated Hub Doubling with a strong counter-clockwise spread on IN GOD WE TRUST, LIBERTY, the star, the date, and the designer's initials FS. The counter-clockwise direction of WDDO-024 contrasts with the clockwise spread of WDDO-002 for the same date, an unusual pairing of opposing-rotation top-ranked varieties on the same proof issue. Struck at the San Francisco Mint on polished planchets with mirror-finish dies. Obverse die markers include a short die gouge in the upper right of the star. Reverse die markers include a strong die scratch between the lower portions of the F and I of FIVE, and short die gouges in the field near the rim upper left of the left side of the building.
