Description

Cataloged by VarietyVista as DDR-012, this doubled die reverse on a 1968-S Jefferson nickel displays medium spread on FIVE CENTS with light spread on the upper portion of UNITED STATES OF AMERICA. Die marker records are particularly complex for this variety, documenting multiple die stages across two different obverse die pairings. Under an unassigned UVC, Stage A is in early die state (unconfirmed), Stage B shows the reverse in early-to-mid die state paired with an obverse listed as DDO-030 also in EMDS, and in a separate pairing under UVC-1769 (DMR-040), Stage C shows the reverse in late mid die state paired with a different obverse die in early die state, listed as DDO-023. The dual obverse die pairing — where the same doubled die reverse was used with two different obverse dies during its production life — adds significant numismatic interest, as collectors can seek specimens from different die marriages. The 1968-S Jefferson nickel was struck at the San Francisco Mint in 75% copper and 25% nickel at 5.0 grams and 21.2 mm. The fact that both paired obverse dies are themselves doubled dies (DDO-030 and DDO-023) means that specimens from either die marriage carry doubled die characteristics on both sides of the coin. This makes DDR-012 particularly desirable for variety collectors, as a single coin can exhibit three distinct die varieties: the DDR reverse plus one of two different DDO obverses, depending on which die marriage produced the specific specimen.
