1968-S Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-022

Description

Class I, Rotated Hub Doubling defines this proof Jefferson Nickel variety, with a nice clockwise spread visible on LIBERTY, the star, the date, IN GOD WE TRUST, and the designer's initials FS. The spread characteristically widens toward the bottom of the lettering, a diagnostic pattern of Class I rotated doubling where the angular displacement between hub impressions causes lower elements to show greater separation than upper elements. Die Markers — Obverse: die gouge (dot) under the upper left crossbar of the first T of TRUST; die dot between the lower portions of the S and second T of TRUST; small series of die gouges between the lower portions of the 9 and 6 of the date; small die dot at the front lower portion of Jefferson's bust. Reverse: this variety is also listed in the Wexler Doubled Die Files as a reverse doubled die, 1968-S Proof 5 cents WDDR-015. The 1968-S proof Jefferson Nickel was struck at San Francisco, where proof coinage resumed after a hiatus during the 1965-1967 Special Mint Set years.
