Description

Designated a "Best Of" Nickel Doubled Die Variety, this 1968 San Francisco Proof Jefferson Nickel is a Class I Rotated Hub doubled die with strong counterclockwise spread on IN GOD WE TRUST, LIBERTY, the star, the date, and the designer's initials FS. Attributed by Timothy Wissert. Class I Rotated Hub doubling occurs when the hub is slightly rotated between impressions during die production, creating spread that radiates from the center of rotation. The strong CCW spread on the motto, date, and designer initials makes WDDO-017 one of the premier doubled die varieties in the entire Jefferson Nickel series, earning its "Best Of" distinction. Obverse die markers include a short die gouge near the rim to the right of the second T of TRUST. Reverse markers feature die scratches on the rim to the left of U of UNITED and die scratches on the rim above PL of PLURIBUS. The 1968-S was the first year proof production resumed at San Francisco after the 1965-1967 suspension, making it a transitional issue. WDDO-017 stands among the most visually dramatic proof nickel doubled dies of the late 1960s.
