Description

Class I rotated hub doubling producing a close, very light clockwise spread on IN GOD WE TRUST, LIBERTY, the star, the date, and the designer's initials FS characterizes this fourteenth DDO for the 1968-S Proof Jefferson Nickel. Class I rotation indicates the hub rotated slightly around its center between hubbing impressions, producing a consistent circular displacement across all design elements that intensifies with distance from the rotation center. Die markers include a die dot above the right arch and a die dot between the small and long left windows on the reverse, while no obverse markers have been noted. Cross-referenced as Wexler Variety ID: 1968-S WDDO-014 Proof and attributed by John A. Wexler, the Proof designation confirms this was produced at the San Francisco Mint using polished dies and planchets for annual Proof sets. The 1968-S Proof Jefferson Nickel resumed San Francisco Proof production after the three-year hiatus from 1965 through 1967 when Proof sets were suspended and replaced by Special Mint Sets. The very light spread across five obverse design elements requires systematic examination under magnification, as the clockwise rotation produces subtle displacement that is consistent in direction but minimal in magnitude.
