1968-S Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-008
ErrorDescription
Marking the return of proof coinage after the 1965-1967 hiatus during which only Special Mint Sets were produced, this 1968-S Proof Jefferson Nickel was among the first proofs struck at San Francisco in three years, and this Class I rotated hub doubled die obverse captures a counterclockwise spread on IN GOD WE TRUST, LIBERTY, the star, the date, and the designer's initials FS — standing for Felix Schlag, whose portrait of Thomas Jefferson won a public design competition in 1938. Class I rotated hub doubling results from a slight angular rotation of the hub between impressions on the die. Attributed by Brian A. Ribar under Wexler Variety ID 1968-S WDDO-008 Proof, the variety carries distinctive reverse die markers: a die scratch through the right arch of Monticello, a die dot to the upper left of the small right window, and a long die scratch running from the L of PLURIBUS to the left porch. These reverse markers are essential for attribution since they confirm the specific die pair.
