Description

Honored as one of the "Best Of" Nickel Doubled Die Varieties — a designation recognizing exceptional visibility among all cataloged Jefferson Nickel doubled dies — the 1968-S Proof Jefferson Nickel WDDO-002 exhibits Class I, Rotated Hub Doubling with a very strong clockwise spread across LIBERTY, the star, the date, IN GOD WE TRUST, and the designer's initials. The spread is wider at the bottom of the affected letters and narrows at the top, a geometric signature of Class I rotational doubling. The 1968-S Proof was struck at the San Francisco Mint on polished planchets with mirror-finish dies. Obverse die markers include a short vertical die scratch inside the upper U of TRUST, and a die gouge forming a dot below and between the 1 and 9 of the date.
