Description

Medium spread across multiple obverse elements characterizes DDO-023 of the 1968-S Proof Jefferson Nickel, with doubling on IN GOD WE TRUST, LIBERTY, the star, the date, and the designer's initials. The breadth of affected elements indicates a substantial hub-doubling event. Attributed by VarietyVista with die markers UVC-1769 and DMR-040, three progressive stages are documented: Stage A shows the obverse in early die state with the reverse listed as DDR-012 in late-mid die state, while Stages B and C in mid and late die states remain unconfirmed. The pairing with DDR-012 creates a dual-variety die where both sides carry cataloged hub-doubling features. The 1968-S represents the first year of exclusive San Francisco proof production after Philadelphia ceased proof operations following 1964, establishing San Francisco as the sole proof facility. Struck in 75% copper and 25% nickel, this proof variety combines medium-strength multi-element doubling with die state documentation across a die paired with its own cataloged doubled die reverse.
