1968-S Doubled Die Obverse DDO-022
Error
Description
Marking the first year that proof production moved exclusively to San Francisco, the 1968-S Jefferson Nickel DDO-022 documents a doubled die obverse on a proof strike from this transitional period. Cataloged as UVC-1658 and DMR-039, die stage progression covers three stages: Stage A is an unconfirmed early die state. Stage B is an unconfirmed mid-die-state. Stage C is an unconfirmed late die state. The 1968-S proof nickel marks a significant production milestone, as prior to 1968, proof coins were struck at the Philadelphia Mint. The San Francisco facility took over all proof coinage beginning this year, making the 1968-S the inaugural proof-only Jefferson Nickel from that mint. While die stage details remain unconfirmed across all three stages, the UVC and DMR catalog numbers establish this variety within the VarietyVista tracking system, and collectors examining proof sets from this transitional year should inspect obverse design elements for the doubled die characteristics documented under DDO-022.
