1968-S Doubled Die Obverse DDO-019
Error
Description
Marking the return of proof coinage after a three-year hiatus, this 1968-S Proof Jefferson Nickel DDO-019 is listed by VarietyVista as UVC-1341 and DMR-025 and exhibits medium spread across a broad range of obverse elements: IN GOD WE TRUST, LIBERTY, the star, the date, and the designer's initials. The 1968-S proof nickel marked the resumption of proof coinage after the three-year hiatus from 1965 through 1967, when Special Mint Sets replaced traditional proof sets. With proof production now centered at San Francisco rather than Philadelphia, the S mintmark became the standard proof identifier going forward. Stage A shows die scratches on the queue — an early die state indicator that helps collectors determine how far into the die's production life a specimen was struck. The medium spread across so many design elements — motto, date, designer's initials, and decorative star — suggests the second hub impression was shifted significantly enough to produce visible doubling across nearly the entire obverse die surface. Felix Schlag's Jefferson portrait captures this spread with clarity on the bold letters of LIBERTY and the date numerals.
