1968-S Doubled Die Obverse DDO-009
Error
Description
Marking the first year proof coins were struck after the 1965-67 hiatus, this 1968-S Proof Jefferson Nickel DDO-009 carries medium-spread doubling on IN GOD WE TRUST, LIBERTY, the star, the date, and the designer's initials. When proof production resumed in 1968, the San Francisco Mint assumed exclusive responsibility for all proof coinage, a role Philadelphia had held previously. Die markers include UVC-1331 and die marriage DMR-015, with three documented stages: Stage A in Early Die State remains unconfirmed, Stage B shows both the obverse and reverse in Mid-Die State, and Stage C in Late Die State is also unconfirmed. Attributed by VarietyVista. Felix Schlag's obverse design provides multiple areas where the medium-spread hub doubling is detectable, from the motto and LIBERTY inscription to the fine details of the star and date numerals. The designer's initials, added below the bust truncation, are among the smaller design elements affected, requiring careful magnification to confirm doubling at that location. As a proof issue, specimens typically exhibit sharper detail that makes the doubled die characteristics more readily observable than on business strikes.
