Description

This Philadelphia Mint listing of the 1968 1¢ WWHO-001 documents the doubled working hub obverse variety as it appears on business strike cents produced at the original U.S. Mint facility. Unlike a conventional doubled die obverse, which affects only the coins struck from a single die, WWHO-001 was imprinted at the working hub level — one step higher in the die manufacturing chain — meaning that every working die produced from the affected hub carried the same doubling, and every coin struck from every one of those dies exhibits the variety. The Philadelphia Mint, as the sole manufacturer of dies for the entire U.S. Mint system, was the facility where the doubled working hub was created, and it was also the first facility to use dies made from that hub for production coinage. The resulting doubling appears on cents from all three active mints in 1968: Philadelphia business strikes (this listing), Denver business strikes, and San Francisco proofs and business strikes. The Wexler Team's documentation explicitly confirms that "numerous working dies for all three Mints were created with this doubled working hub including S-Mint proof dies," establishing WWHO-001 as a hub-level anomaly with unprecedented cross-mint scope. For the Philadelphia cent collector, WWHO-001 occupies a unique position in the variety hierarchy: it is simultaneously one of the most common varieties (because it appears on coins from every die made from the hub) and one of the least recognized (because many collectors are unfamiliar with the working hub doubling concept and overlook it as minor die deterioration). Cataloged under Wexler Variety ID: 1968-P,D,S 1¢ WWHO-001. No other cross-references are known. Attributed by the Wexler Team. Struck on a 3.11-gram, 19mm planchet of 95% copper and 5% zinc at the Philadelphia Mint.
