1968-D Doubled Die Obverse DDO-002
Error
Description
Recognized as FS-101 in the Fivaz-Stanton cross-reference system, this 1968-D Kennedy Half Dollar carries a light triple spread on IN GOD WE TRUST, the date, and the Y of LIBERTY — three separate design elements showing evidence of multiple hubbing impressions on the obverse die. The triple spread indicates the die received at least three slightly offset impressions during the hubbing process, a less common occurrence than standard doubled dies. VarietyVista cataloged the variety under UVC-126 with die marker reference DMR-003, tracking three die stages. Stage A at early die state remains unconfirmed, Stage B at mid-die state is distinguished by light die scratches running north-south across the obverse, and Stage C documents both obverse and reverse at late die state. The 1968 Denver Mint issue holds historical significance as the first year mint marks returned to U.S. coinage after the no-mintmark experiment of 1965-1967, and the 40% silver clad composition continued through 1970. The FS-101 designation places DDO-002 among the most widely recognized varieties for this date, ensuring strong collector demand and consistent coverage in variety reference guides.
