1967 Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-005

Description

Strong clockwise rotational spread emanating from a pivot point at approximately the 7 o'clock position distinguishes WDDO-005 of the 1967 Washington Clad Quarter, with the doubling manifesting on the lower letters of LIBERTY. The pivot at 7 o'clock means elements diametrically opposite — near 1 o'clock — would show maximum displacement, while elements near the pivot point itself show minimal movement. LIBERTY's lower letters, positioned in the upper-left obverse field, fall between these extremes, receiving a strong clockwise (CW) displacement. The 1967 quarter was struck without a mintmark, as all coins from 1965 through 1967 omitted mint identification to discourage hoarding during the coinage shortage. This was also the first full year of clad composition production for the Washington Quarter, following the Coinage Act of 1965 that ended silver in circulating coinage. No obverse or reverse die markers have been noted by the Wexler Team, making the rotational spread itself the primary and sole diagnostic. Cataloged under Wexler Variety ID 1967 25c WDDO-005 with no known cross-references, this fifth documented WDDO for the date demonstrates that the transition to clad composition and new die preparation processes did not eliminate hub doubling — if anything, the massive production demands of the coinage shortage era may have increased the pace of die sinking and created more opportunities for misalignment.
