1967 Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-002

Description

Among the most sought-after doubled die varieties of the Special Mint Set era, the 1967 Washington Quarter WDDO-002 is found in 1967 Special Mint Sets and shows a strong Class I counterclockwise spread on LIBERTY, IN GOD WE TRUST, the date, the designer's initials, the lower queue of Washington's hair, and his eyelid. Cross-references are CONECA 2-O-I and Cherrypickers FS-25-1967-101. The Special Mint Set years of 1965 through 1967 produced no mintmark-bearing proof or business-strike coins; all production came from SMS planchets and dies, giving SMS-issue varieties a collecting context distinct from standard doubled dies. Obverse die markers are not noted as significant; the reverse carries a die scratch running SW to NE from the A to the T in STATES, and a small die gouge appears as a dot inside the upper D of UNITED.
